Prosthodontics is one of the newly created specialities of the General Dental Council. It deals with, but not exclusively with, the replacement of missing teeth and associated hard and soft tissues with fixed removable or implant protheses.
The benefits of crown and bridgework and removable prostheses are well known. The advent of implants, however, into mainstream dental practice, has had a profound influence on the prosthodontic management of our patients.

The Branemark system and others have been shown through proper clinical trials to be a predictable means of replacing missing teeth or supporting a removable prosthesis.
When considering teeth with a very poor prognosis those that we may have once considered to svae may now be extracted in favour of an implant restoration.
It is nevertheless important that the potential benefits of implants should always be carefully considered against the alternatives. Prosthodontics is arguably at the centre of implant treatment, but not to the exclusion of other specialities.
Paul O'Neilly is happy to take referrals either for treatment or for advice relating to:
- Implants - placement or placement and restoration
- Crown and Bridgework - conventional or adhesive
- Veneers
- Worn teeth
- Removable or complete dentures
- Occlusal / TMD problems
